The biggest crowd ever to watch Chelsea saw their limitations brutally exposed by a first-half surge by Real Madrid.
Real were depleted but still roared into a 3-0 lead inside 39 minutes at the Michigan Stadium, a venue known locally as the Big House, before 105,826 spectators.
Eden Hazard came on and pulled two back for the Londoners, late in the game, by which time the European champions had made nine changes and sending on many younger players.
